Yes, this tour can be suitable for older adults and children, as long as some precautions are taken. Due to the altitude of the Colca Canyon and other high points, such as the Mirador de los Volcanes, it is important to be aware of altitude sickness (soroche), which can affect both children and older adults. It is recommended:
- Adapt to the altitude: Make frequent stops to rest and allow the body to acclimatize.
- Hydrate well: Drink water constantly and avoid excessive physical exertion.
- Consult a physician: If any of the passengers have pre-existing health conditions, it is advisable to consult a professional before embarking on the trip.
- Gentle activities: Choose more relaxing activities, such as enjoying the thermal baths or leisurely walks through the villages.
With these precautions, the tour can be an enriching and enjoyable experience for all family members.
The best time to visit the Colca Valley is during the dry season, which runs from March to November. During these months, weather conditions are more favorable, with sunny days and less rain, making it more comfortable for exploring the canyon, hiking and enjoying the panoramic views. In addition, temperatures are pleasant during the day, although nights can be cold due to the altitude.
Rainy season (November to March)
The rainy season runs from November to March, with the heaviest rains between January and February. During this period, the weather is more unpredictable, with frequent rains that can make outdoor activities and access to some areas of the valley difficult. However, the landscape is very green and lush, which also offers a special beauty for those who enjoy nature at its best.
Additional considerations:
- Temperatures: In the dry season, daytime temperatures are pleasant (around 18-25°C), but nights can be cold, especially at higher points in the valley.
- Altitude: Regardless of the season, the altitude of the Colca Valley can cause altitude sickness, so it is important to take precautions to adapt gradually.
In summary, the best season to visit the Colca Valley is between March and November, when the weather conditions are more favorable to enjoy all the outdoor activities and the breathtaking scenery of the canyon.
In the Colca Valley, the option of paying by credit card is limited. Although some tourist establishments, such as hotels and restaurants in more touristy areas like Chivay or Cabanaconde, may accept credit cards, it is not a common option in all towns in the valley, especially in smaller towns like Yanque or Maca.
It is advisable to carry cash in soles, as many stores, markets and local services only accept cash payments. Also, be sure to withdraw money from ATMs in Arequipa before you leave, as there are not many options for card withdrawals in the valley.
We offer accommodation in 3-star hotels and exclusive lodges in the Colca Valley. These accommodations combine comfort and an authentic experience, allowing our travelers to enjoy a relaxed and close-to-nature environment, ideal for exploring the region in comfort.
The Colca Valley is located at an average altitude of 3,200 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.). However, due to its extension, the altitude varies throughout the valley. The highest point, such as the Mirador de los Volcanes in Patapampa, reaches 4,900 m.a.s.l., while some of the lowest towns, such as Chivay, are at around 3,600 m.a.s.l..
It is important to take into account the altitude when visiting the valley, as the lack of oxygen at high altitude can cause altitude sickness (soroche), especially if you ascend quickly. It is recommended to take precautions to gradually adapt to the altitude.
When visiting the Colca Valley, it is important to bring adequate clothing for the changing weather conditions and altitude. Here are some recommendations:
1. Warm clothing
The weather in the Colca Valley can be cold, especially in the mornings and evenings, due to the altitude. Bring a thick jacket or coat, preferably waterproof, as rains are common at certain times of the year.
2. Light clothing for the day
During the day, especially in the warmer months (May to October), temperatures may rise. Wear comfortable, lightweight clothing, such as long or short-sleeved shirts and breathable pants.
3. Sun protection
Due to the altitude, exposure to the sun is more intense. It is advisable to wear a hat or cap, sunglasses and sunscreen with a high sun protection factor.
4. Appropriate footwear
If you plan on hiking or trekking, such as trekking in the Colca Canyon, wear comfortable hiking boots or shoes with good grip. If you are not going to do much walking, comfortable walking shoes will also be useful.
5. Clothing for altitude sickness
Although it is not strictly necessary, some people prefer to bring additional clothing such as a sweater or vest to be warmer in the higher areas, such as the Mirador de los Volcanes.
6. Clothing for thermal baths
If you plan to enjoy the thermal baths in places like Chivay or Chacapi, don’t forget to bring a bathing suit and towel.
7. Gloves and scarf (optional)
If you are traveling in the cold season (November to March), it may be useful to bring gloves and a scarf to protect you from the cold wind.
With these recommendations, you will be well prepared to enjoy your visit to the Colca Valley, regardless of the weather or the activities you choose to do.
