Historic Center of Arequipa
The historic center of the city of Arequipa is located in the province and region of the same name. It stands out for its buildings built with sillar, a carved volcanic rock that gives it a unique architectural style.

Itinerary
Start of the tour
We will pick you up from your hotel located in downtown Arequipa. From there, we will start our pedestrian tour through the historic center.
Visit to the Main Square
We will start with a visit to the emblematic Plaza de Armas of Arequipa. There you will receive a detailed explanation about the history of the Cathedral and the colonial portals that surround the square.
Church of the Company of Jesus
Then, we will go to the Church of the Company of Jesus. There we will offer a brief explanation about its history, its construction and the characteristics that make it one of the most representative temples of Arequipa.
Cloisters of the Company
At one side of the church, we will visit the Cloisters of the Company. In this place you can appreciate the pillars sculpted in ashlar and the beautiful corridors that surround the central patio, a clear example of Arequipa’s mestizo baroque art.
Visit to the San Camilo Market
We will continue to the San Camilo Market, one of the most traditional markets in Arequipa. This market was built on the remains of an old church and is known for its colonial architecture and lively atmosphere.
During the visit, you will be able to taste the famous queso helado, a typical Arequipa dessert made with milk, sugar and cinnamon, which is served cold and delights locals and visitors alike.
San Francisco Square and Church
We will visit the Plaza and Church of San Francisco, one of the most beautiful architectural ensembles of the city. It is a place full of history, very quiet and surrounded by a special atmosphere that invites you to contemplate its architecture and environment.
Fundo El Fierro
Then we will go to Fundo El Fierro, an old colonial building that was once Arequipa’s jail. Today, it functions as a charming handicraft center, where you can find souvenirs made by local artisans.
Neighborhood of San Lázaro
The neighborhood of San Lazaro is considered the oldest in Arequipa. According to tradition, the second foundation of the city took place here.
This picturesque neighborhood stands out for its narrow cobblestone streets and houses built in ashlar, which preserve the historical essence of Arequipa and transport visitors to its origins.
In its surroundings is the Church of San Lazaro, one of the first temples founded in the city, which adds a touch of majesty to the neighborhood.
This place, full of history and legends, allows you to breathe the colonial atmosphere of Arequipa and is fundamental to understand the birth and growth of the city.
Meeting with South American camelids
During our visit, we will have the opportunity to get close to South American camelids. We will be able to get up close to alpacas and llamas, two emblematic species of the region.
Handmade alpaca fiber process
We will learn about the fascinating process of making garments from the soft and warm alpaca fiber. We will discover each stage: from the collection of the fiber, its spinning and dyeing, to the making of high quality garments.
These garments have gained worldwide prestige for their softness, durability and exceptional thermal properties. It will be a unique experience to understand the cultural and artisanal value of alpaca fiber and how local artisans transform this raw material into exceptional products that reflect tradition and talent.
Monastery of Santa Catalina
The Santa Catalina Monastery is a historic convent founded in 1580. It is famous for its impressive colonial architecture and its peculiar layout, which resembles a city within the city.
With streets, squares and buildings painted in vibrant colors, the monastery was originally a place of retreat for Dominican nuns, who lived there in total seclusion.
Today, it is one of Arequipa’s main tourist attractions. It offers visitors a fascinating insight into 16th century monastic life.
