The tour to the necropolis of Chauchilla, is the most requested excursion after the overflight. It is always visited before or after the overflight and is located about 30 kilometers south of Nazca, the first 21 km we made it on paved road via Panamerican Highway with a trip to the south and the rest of the stretch that goes east on an unpaved road here in Peru we call it "trocha" the interesting thing about this cemetery is that it is perhaps the only one in Peru that allows to appreciate the mummies in their original tombs.
The mummies of the Chauchilla cemetery are in a good state of conservation in spite of their age and in many of them you can still see remains of hair and even some skin, also remains of offerings, belongings and there is even a mummified animal. The conservation has been possible in great part thanks to the arid and dry climate of the Nazca desert, remember that it almost never rains in these lands.
The ancient inhabitants of Nazca also had the custom of burying their people in a fetal position and always facing east and buried with their belongings possibly with some fantastic idea of being able to make use in the near future like many civilizations that flourished in southern Peru.
We will start our first tour by making a stop at the site where a master craftsman will give us a good explanation about Nazca ceramics to understand more about the iconography and also about how the ancient inhabitants of Nazca made such colorful and beautiful ceramics.
Continuing our tour we will head south of Nazca, following the Panamerican Highway for about 21 kilometers and then we will make a detour on a rough, 7 kilometer road that leads to the archaeological site of Chauchilla.
In the cemetery of Chauchilla we will visit several tombs containing ceramic fragments and very ancient human remains.
Also our guide will show and explain about the civilizations and lordships that lie in these tombs.
At the end of the tour we will leave you near the main square or the enclosure of Nazca.
