The Devil of the Cathedral of Arequipa-Peru

Did you know that inside the Cathedral of Arequipa there is a demon?.

This demon carved in Carrara wood was brought from France in 1879. It is one of the few temples in America where we can find this work of art.

What is the meaning of the Devil of the Cathedral of Arequipa?

The story goes that in the times of the colony and the republic, the masses were developed in the pulpit that is located above this devil and it is said that this represents the power of God over the evil on earth, the platform, where once the priests addressed the parishioners, crushes Satan to symbolize the triumph of God over evil. This malevolent image with horns, hairy wings and a serpent’s tail is a favorite of visitors to the Cathedral.

That is why it is one of the must-see places to visit when you visit Arequipa.

We will pick you up from your hotel in downtown Arequipa and start our pedestrian tour. First we will visit the Main Square of Arequipa where we will have a detailed explanation of the history of the Cathedral of Arequipa and the portals that surround the Main Square.

Afterwards we will go to the Church of the Company of Jesus where we will give a brief explanation about the history of the church, its construction and characteristics that make it so representative in the city.

Casa Tristán del Pozo, currently administered by the Continental bank, is a historic building for many scholars of architecture, the pediment of the facade of this house is the best example of the typical ornamentation of Arequipa in Peru.

Plaza and Church of San Francisco, one of the most beautiful buildings in the city, a very beautiful and quiet place.

Neighborhood of San Lazaro, the oldest neighborhood where it is said to be the place where the second foundation of Arequipa took place.
