Arequipa with Kids 2026: Best Family Tours & What to Skip

Traveling to Arequipa with kids in 2026 is not only possible — it’s one of the best family adventures Peru has to offer, if you know which tours to choose and which to skip. Unlike Cusco (11,150 ft / 3,400 m) or Puno (12,550 ft / 3,827 m), Arequipa sits at just 7,660 feet (2,335 m) above sea level, making it the perfect base to introduce children to the Andean world without the risk of serious altitude sickness.

At Turismo Liberty we take families with children of all ages — from babies as young as 4 months to teenagers — on tours around Arequipa, Colca Canyon and Salinas Lagoon. In this guide we tell you exactly which tours work with kids, from $12 per person, which ones to avoid and how to book your family plan. For a fast answer, message us on WhatsApp at +51 959 175 901 — we reply in under 5 minutes.

🎒 Best family tours in Arequipa: what works (and why)

The key to Arequipa with kids is choosing excursions done mostly by comfortable vehicle, with no long walks and at an altitude children can handle. These three Turismo Liberty tours tick every box:

🪨 Sillar Route

From $12/pp
  • Watch stone carvers shaping volcanic rock
  • Culebrillas Canyon — a dramatic landscape
  • Añashuayco quarries (actively worked)
  • Suitable from age 4
  • Duration: 4 hours
  • Departures: 9 AM and 2 PM

✅ Salinas Lagoon — pink flamingos at 14,100 ft (4,300 m)

The Salinas Lagoon is the most spectacular tour for children over 5: Andean flamingos (parihuanas) just meters away, the active Ubinas volcano in the background and the most striking salt flat in southern Peru. The full route is done by minivan — the short walk on the salt flat is flat and brief. Priced from $27 per person with Turismo Liberty, breakfast included.

💡 Guide tip: If you’re travelling with children under 4, start with the City Tour Campiña on day one and save Salinas Lagoon for day two. Little ones need 24–48 hours to acclimatize before going up to 14,100 ft — even by vehicle. Families who follow this order have a far smoother experience.

🏔️ Arequipa altitude: what parents need to know

Arequipa sits at 7,660 ft (2,335 m) above sea level — a moderate altitude that most healthy babies and children tolerate well from day one. For context, it is far more accessible than Cusco (11,150 ft / 3,400 m) or the highest points of Colca Canyon (16,100 ft / 4,910 m). The city of Arequipa, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, is the ideal gateway to the Andean Highlands for families.

Destination Altitude Altitude sickness risk (kids) Minimum recommended age
Arequipa city 7,660 ft / 2,335 m 🟢 Low Babies (with precautions)
Salinas Lagoon 14,100 ft / 4,300 m 🟡 Moderate 5 years and up
Chivay (Colca) 11,800 ft / 3,600 m 🟡 Moderate 3 years (with acclimatization)
Cruz del Cóndor 12,800 ft / 3,900 m 🔴 High 5 years and up
⚠️ Altitude sickness signs in babies and children requiring immediate attention: extreme irritability for no apparent reason, refusal to feed, blue lips or fingernails (cyanosis), rapid breathing at rest. If any of these appear, descend immediately and seek medical attention. In Arequipa city, most healthy babies show no symptoms.

🚫 Tours to skip with young children in Arequipa

Knowing what NOT to do is just as important as knowing what to do. These Arequipa tours are not recommended for children under 5 or babies — though they are extraordinary for families with older kids:

  • Chili River Rafting: Class II–III rapids, minimum age 16. Completely unsuitable for young children or babies.
  • ATV Quad Bikes in Chilina Valley: Requires a minimum age of 16. An adventure activity incompatible with younger children.
  • El Misti Volcano Ascent: 2-day high-altitude trek (19,100 ft / 5,822 m). Adults with excellent fitness only.
  • Pillones Waterfall (children under 8): Involves a 30-minute walk on uneven terrain at 12,470 ft / 3,800 m. With children over 8 in good health, it’s perfect.
  • Colca Canyon Full Day with children under 3: The 1-day version climbs quickly to high altitude with no acclimatization time. Better to wait for the 2-day version with overnight in Chivay.

Not sure whether a specific tour suits your children’s ages? Message us on WhatsApp with your group’s ages and we’ll advise you — no obligation. We’ve been organizing family tours in Arequipa for over 10 years and know exactly what works at every age.

🦅 Is Colca Canyon suitable for children?

Yes — but with conditions. The Colca Canyon from Arequipa is the most breathtaking experience in southern Peru: watching the Andean condor soar from the Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint is something children never forget. The key is choosing the right format:

☀️ Colca Full Day (1 day)

From $27/pp
  • There and back in the same day
  • Reaches 16,100 ft / 4,910 m without acclimatization
  • ⚠️ Not recommended with children under 5
  • Children over 8 in good health: OK

📅 Best time to visit Arequipa with kids in 2026

Arequipa enjoys a dry, sunny climate for most of the year, making it an excellent family destination throughout 2026. The main variable is the rainy season, which mainly affects visits to Salinas Lagoon and Colca Canyon.

🎒 What to pack for Arequipa with kids: full checklist

This is the packing list Turismo Liberty shares with every family before their trip to Arequipa. It covers the three main tours: City Tour Campiña, Sillar Route and Salinas Lagoon.

🧥 Clothing and layers

  • Fleece or wool jacket (Arequipa mornings are cool, 50–57°F / 10–14°C)
  • Layered clothing — afternoon sun is intense even in winter
  • For Salinas Lagoon (14,100 ft / 4,300 m): hat, gloves and extra warm layers
  • Comfortable closed-toe shoes with non-slip soles (no flip-flops)

🧴 Personal care

  • SPF 50+ sunscreen — UV radiation burns much faster at altitude
  • Lip balm and moisturizer — Andean air is very drying
  • UV-filter sunglasses for the children
  • Altitude sickness tablets or drops recommended by your paediatrician

🍼 For babies and toddlers

  • Ergonomic baby carrier (better than a stroller on uneven ground)
  • Water bottle — constant hydration is essential at altitude
  • Snacks for vehicle journeys
  • Extra nappies and a change of clothes (tours last 4–8 hours)
  • Regular baby medicines + prescription in Spanish

💰 Cash to have on hand

  • ~$12/adult for Santa Catalina Monastery (if you add the City Tour Centro)
  • ~$3 for site fees on the Sillar Route (Añashuayco + Culebrillas)
  • ~$5 for Chacapi thermal baths (if doing the 2-day Colca)
  • Guide tip: $3–6 per person is customary

❓ FAQ — Arequipa with Kids 2026

Is Arequipa safe for babies and toddlers?

Yes. Arequipa sits at 7,660 ft (2,335 m) — an altitude most healthy babies and toddlers tolerate well with the right precautions. Consult your paediatrician before the trip, keep your baby well hydrated, avoid high-altitude excursions in the first days and watch for altitude sickness signs (unusual irritability, feeding refusal, bluish lips). Turismo Liberty’s City Tour Campiña is the ideal first tour: it stays at 7,660 ft without going higher, lasts 4–5 hours in a comfortable vehicle and the pace adapts to the family group.

Can you do Colca Canyon with young children?

It depends on the age. Colca Canyon reaches over 16,100 ft (4,910 m) at some points, making it risky for babies under 6 months and children with any respiratory condition. For children aged 3 and up in good health, the 2-day version with overnight in Chivay (11,800 ft / 3,600 m) is most recommended: it allows gradual acclimatization. Avoid the Full Day if travelling with children under 5. Turismo Liberty adapts the pace to the family group — ask via WhatsApp before booking.

How much do family tours cost in Arequipa?

Family tours in Arequipa with Turismo Liberty start from $12 per person for the Sillar Route (half day), $27 per person for the City Tour Campiña or Salinas Lagoon (full day). The 4-day Arequipa package including hotel, guide and all tours starts from $155 per person sharing a double room. Children under 3 generally don’t pay for the tour, only site entrance fees where applicable.

What age is appropriate for kids to visit Colca Canyon?

The general recommendation is not to take babies under 6 months above 11,500 ft (3,500 m). For Colca Canyon, which reaches 16,100 ft (4,910 m), the ideal is to wait until 3–4 years of age with good health and do it on the 2-day version with acclimatization in Chivay. Between ages 5 and 12 the Colca is perfectly enjoyed, especially the moment when the Andean condor soars overhead.

What are the best family-friendly tours in Arequipa?

The best tours with young children in Arequipa are: the City Tour Campiña (see alpacas, llamas, vicuñas and guanacos at Incalpaca), the Sillar Route (watch stone carvers in action) and the Salinas Lagoon (pink flamingos at 14,100 ft / 4,300 m). All three tours use comfortable vehicle transport, require no long walks and the Turismo Liberty guide adapts explanations to all ages.

What is the altitude of Arequipa and is it safe for kids?

Arequipa sits at 7,660 feet (2,335 meters) above sea level — a moderate altitude that most healthy babies and children tolerate without issues. It is far more accessible than Cusco (11,150 ft / 3,400 m) or Puno (12,550 ft / 3,827 m). During the first days, keep children well hydrated, avoid exertion and skip high-altitude tours. If your baby shows extreme irritability, feeding refusal or bluish lips, descend immediately and consult a doctor.

Excellent · Turismo Liberty Peru
We traveled with our two kids aged 4 and 7. The City Tour Campiña was an absolute hit — the children went crazy for the alpacas and vicuñas. The Turismo Liberty guide adapted the whole pace to our group and explained the history in a way even the youngest could follow. On day two we did the Sillar Route and they loved watching the stone carvers too. We’ll definitely be back.
We came from Australia with our 3-year-old daughter. We were worried about the altitude but at Arequipa (7,660 ft / 2,335 m) we had no problems at all. We did the Colca Canyon 2-day trip with overnight in Chivay, exactly as Turismo Liberty recommended, and it was perfect — she was fully acclimatized by the time we reached Cruz del Cóndor. Seeing the condor soar above her was a moment I’ll never forget.
Salinas Lagoon was the highlight of the whole trip for my kids aged 6 and 9 — the flamingos were just meters away and the volcanoes in the background made it look unreal. Turismo Liberty picked us up at the hotel at 6 AM and the guide was exceptional. The breakfast included on the way was a touch the kids really appreciated. 100% recommended.
