Things to See in Puno City 2026: Cathedral & Viewpoints

Wondering what the things to see in Puno city actually are, beyond Lake Titicaca? A guided walk covers them in one morning: the Cathedral, the Deustua Arch, Huajsapata Hill, the Condor Viewpoint and the lakeside boardwalk. That walk is day 3 of the Traditional Puno 3-Day / 2-Night tour with Turismo Liberty, which starts at $169 per adult (priced for 2 travelers) with hotel, guide and transfers included. If you already have your dates, message us on WhatsApp +51 959 175 901 and we’ll confirm availability in under 5 minutes.

Most travelers treat Puno as a base for the islands and skip the center, which is a missed morning. The city is compact, the viewpoints are free, and the lake looks different from above. Below you’ll find each stop with its key fact, the order of the route, how to split your days between city and lake, and how to walk at 12,470 ft (3,800 m) without wearing yourself out.

🏛️ The 6 Stops on Puno’s Walking City Tour

The day 3 program covers six stops, most within walking distance of each other. None takes long, but each one has a story:

1. Puno Cathedral

Built in 1757 in a mestizo baroque style with Andean touches on its facade, it anchors the Plaza de Armas. In front you’ll see the statue of Colonel Francisco Bolognesi, and a few steps away the Casa del Corregidor, one of the oldest houses in town (17th century). On Jirón Deustua you can also spot the Conde de Lemos balcony, dated 1668.

2. Deustua Arch

A stone monument honoring the patriots of the battles of Junín and Ayacucho. It’s a classic stop on any walk through the historic center and sits a short distance from the main square.

3. Huajsapata Hill

A few blocks from the Plaza de Armas, this hill is crowned by a statue of Manco Cápac, the legendary founder of the Inca Empire. The panoramic view takes in the whole city with Lake Titicaca behind it.

4. Condor Viewpoint (Kuntur Wasi)

A giant stone Andean condor watches over the city from above. The view covers Puno and part of the lake, but reaching it means climbing more than 700 steps, according to visitor reviews. Go slowly, bring water and go in daylight.

5. Latkacota Market

This is where you see everyday life for locals: stalls of regional products, food and crafts. It’s the most local stop of the route and the best one to understand how the city lives away from the tourist circuit.

6. Tourist Boardwalk (Malecón)

A lakeside promenade, ideal for photos, a breather and a gentle end to the walk, with no steps to climb.

If you have spare time outside the guided program, the center offers more: Jirón Lima, the pedestrian street linking the Plaza de Armas to Parque Pino, the Carlos Dreyer Municipal Museum, San Juan church and the Yavarí museum ship at the port. These are not part of the Turismo Liberty itinerary.

🚶 The Walking Route Step by Step (3 Hours)

These are the stops in the order they appear in the day 3 program:

  • 9:00 AM — Walking City Tour begins. You set out with your certified guide to cover the city’s main cultural, historical and natural sights.
  • Puno Cathedral. The 1757 facade and Plaza de Armas, the heart of the historic center.
  • Deustua Arch. Monument to the patriots of Junín and Ayacucho.
  • Huajsapata Hill. Your first panoramic view of the city and Lake Titicaca.
  • Condor Viewpoint (Kuntur Wasi). The toughest stop because of its staircases: go at your own pace.
  • Latkacota Market and the Boardwalk. Local life, then a lakeside stroll to rest your legs.
  • 12:00 PM — End of the walk and free lunch. Your guide suggests where to try the most representative local dishes.

⚖️ City or Lake? How to Split Your Days in Puno

Travel guides usually suggest at least three days in the area: one for the city and two for the lake. Turismo Liberty offers several ways to build that, and only one includes the city walk:

🎒 Altitude & What to Pack for Walking Puno at 3,800 m

Puno sits at roughly 12,470 ft (3,800 m), and the tour reaches a maximum altitude of 3,817 m. Walk slowly, drink water and take the first day easy. To prepare, read our guide to altitude sickness in Puno and our Lake Titicaca packing list. The basics for the city walk:

  • Comfortable, warm clothing — the altiplano can be cold, even during the day.
  • Sturdy shoes — the viewpoint staircases and steep streets call for good grip.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat — the sun burns faster at this altitude.
  • Water bottle — it helps you cope with the altitude during the walk.
⚠️ What most guides don’t mention: the Condor Viewpoint adds more than 700 steps at 3,800 m. Don’t rush it, don’t save it for after dark, and bring water. If you feel dizzy or short of breath, slow down or skip that stop.

🎭 Puno in February: The Candelaria Festival

Puno is known as Peru’s folkloric capital, and its biggest celebration is the Virgen de la Candelaria festival, held every February. San Juan church keeps the image of the Virgin, and dance troupes parade along Jirón Lima to the Plaza de Armas and the Cathedral. For 2026, regional tourism officials expected more than 120,000 visitors, up from 86,000 the year before (Andina). If you travel then, book far ahead: hotels and tours fill quickly.
